Plastic surgery

To function properly the eye also depends on the position and working of the eyelids. The eyelids are also very important for a person’s appearance. The lower eyelids may turn inwards or outwards – particularly as a person gets older.  All these abnormalities can cause eye irritation and deterioration of vision. Surgery can offer a solution.

Entropion

Cause

This problem is also generally due to ageing and scarring of any kind.

Symptoms

It causes the eyelashes and eyelid skin to rub against the eye, making it red and irritated. If the entropion is not operated on, there is the risk that the eyelashes rub against the cornea and damage it.

Surgery

The problem can generally be corrected under local anaesthetic.

Ectropion

Cause

As a person ages, the lower eyelid sags in the horizontal direction. It then droops away from the eye and turns outwards. This may also be caused by scarring or skin conditions.

Symptoms

An eyelid that turns outwards causes eye irritation, tears, redness and sensitivity to bright light and wind.

Surgery

The ectropion can generally be removed by surgery under local anaesthetic.
